If you're level up your pet while it's death it never evolves, it doesn't deal/take any damage, so it never evolves to aggresive or playful.

An "unevolved" pet has the same stats as an Elder pet. You should change the method you are using to evolve your next one.

If you want dire pet (other than a phoenix/rainbow phoenix), a fast way to do it is:
1) Go kill the stuff near a rez shrine closest to where the untamed pet is. Then,
2) Pull the untamed pet over near the rez shrine. Then,
3) Take off your armor and shield, leaving on any piece that is minus-health.
4) Let it kill you until it is level 20.
4) Put your armor back on and charm it.

Elder evolution is a little trickier, and I'll let you do more research if that is your goal.

If you want a hearty pet, an easy way to do it is to just bring it along on your other activities, but also have a pet rez skill, and DO NOT use pet protective skills like [call of protection]. Let your pet get into the action and take some damage before you kill things. The number of times it dies is irrelevant (as long as you rez it), the amount of damage he takes is what matters if your goal is hearty. Most pets will evolve as hearty if no specific strategies are employed by the beastmaster.

This is how i do it. Nothing special.

Make sure they are attacking you, then have your pet peck em down. may take a couple of tries to get this right. If your pet gets hit once, tele out. You dont want it to die

Mind you... alone for the drops its worth it, by the time ur pet is lv 15 and Dire you will start getting "overfarmed" messages. ^^

EDIT: forgot to mention staff has +20% enchants.

My technique for death leveling is to bring a hero with some crappy rez that only brings you back with 25% health. By the time you get to 60 DP, the pet should be killing you with 1-2 hits. Be sure to disable all skills on your monk but rez and be sure to put them on avoid combat (nothing worse than fighting your way to a white crab and watching your stupid Dunkoro kill your pet when he goes hostile). Also give your hero a self heal like Troll Unguent, because the pet will eventually start chipping away at your heroes health as they level up.

I was able to level up my jingle bear by raptor farming (would work for phoenix too). You can level up heroes this way too, you just have to flag them around a bit to avoid aggro.

A pet evolves to a spacific form though damage output / damage income and by that they get evolved. Your pet is dead, thus not dealing or suffering ANY damage, thus will stay neutral.

Another way to do this is to cap the pet, then go to the isle of nameless, let it attack the master of healing for a while (u can lock it on the master of healing and go afk for like 15-30 mins or so) and then just use the same method as u did (farm with ur jujundu ..SS/LB farming for example) and it gets dire..
